Undergraduate Research

The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at UT Austin is recognized as one of the leading chemistry research departments in the country, so our undergraduates have an incredible opportunity to become involved in world-class research. Chemistry and biochemistry majors are encouraged to participate in research as early as their freshman year and to apply what is learned in the classroom using cutting-edge technologies in the lab. If you are considering a scientific career, you should definitely try undergraduate research to see if you enjoy it before pursuing a graduate degree.

Even though some research labs require you to have completed a certain level of coursework before considering your application, you should still apply as soon as possible. Signing up to be on the undergraduate research mailing list is an easy way to hear about research openings, seminars, meetings, and internships.

There are opportunities for undergraduates to apply for research funding. Particularly, the university offers fellowships of up to $1,000 each year. Our department also participates in the Beckman Scholars program, which provides money to outstanding students who are pursuing careers in research.

Work in a lab can be done for research credit, for pay, or purely to gain experience. All undergraduates who participate in research have the opportunity to present their research at the Undergraduate Research Forum in the spring, to publish their work in the Undergraduate Research Journal, and to participate in a variety of scientific conferences. Whether you join a research group or are just interested, all students in the College of Natural Sciences are eligible to join the Science Undergraduate Research Group (SURGE).
