How to Apply

Deadlines for Fall Admission:

• US and Permanent Residents: January 11th
• International Applicants: November 15th

Our page of graduate application tips is designed to help your application process. You should read the general information supplied by UT for prospective UT graduate students. If you are an international student, you should also read the additional information specific for international student applicants.

To apply for graduate school in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, fill in the online application forms. Paper application forms are no longer available. Please do not send photographs, folders, or portfolios with your application materials.

To fill in the application forms, you will need to know the appropriate major code: Biochemistry (613500) or Chemistry (620900).

If you are considering a MD/PhD dual degree in Chemistry or Biochemistry (the MD portion is at UT-Medical Branch, Galveston, TX), please see the following website for information on admission requirements and how to apply to the program through AMCAS: http://www.mdphd.utexas.edu

Applications to the dual degree program are ONLY accepted through AMCAS. For more information on the MD/PhD Program application process (613600), please contact Ms. Leslie Walters (lesliemdphd@mail.utexas.edu via email).

Your application is complete when the following items have been received by Graduate & International Admissions Center, The University of Texas at Austin, P.O. Box 7608, Austin, TX 78713-7608:

• On-line application
• Application fee ($50 for US citizens and permanent residents; $75 for international students)
• Original transcripts (Send original transcripts to the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry)
• Official GRE scores - Verbal and quantitative (math) scores: The University of Texas at Austin institution code is R6882 (Chemistry code is 0301, Biochemistry is 0202). We do not currently require the Chemistry subject test for admission. Photocopies of GRE scores are not acceptable. (The University of Texas at Austin, ETS Institution Code, is R6882. Departmental Codes for ETS are 0301 for Chemistry and 0202 for Biochemistry.)
• Official TOEFL scores (International students)
• Statement of purpose (Submit with online application)
• Three letters of recommendation (Submit via online application). An email will be automatically generated and sent to the recommender to visit a website and complete a questionnaire. The letters will automatically be routed to the department. If you make a mistake on the email address of a recommender or you need to replace one recommender with another, please contact: Marla Boye (marla.boye@austin.utexas.edu).
• Current CV or resume listing educational background, any related employment experience, and any relevant research experience (send to Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry)

It is recommended that you specify in your Statement of Purpose which broad area of chemistry best describes your interests: analytical, biochemistry, inorganic, organic, or physical. Please feel free to mention interdisciplinary interests. Please also mention in your personal statement the names of any of our faculty members whose research particularly interests you. A list of our faculty and a synopsis of their research is listed on our faculty pages.

Please do not include photographs, folders, or portfolios with your application materials. It is not necessary to use any paper other than standard white paper.

The deadline for Fall admission is January 11th of each year (or November 15th for international applicants). All applicants will be considered for financial support in the form of teaching assistantships, graduate research assistantships and/or fellowships.
