How to Apply

Deadlines for Fall Admission:

  • US and Permanent Residents: January 15th
  • International Applicants: January 1st

Before you apply for graduate school, we recommend visiting the Office of Graduate Studies for general admissions requirements. Our page of graduate application tips is designed to help you through the application process. If you are an international student, you should also read the specific information for international applicants.

Click here to apply for graduate school in Biochemistry. To apply for graduate school in Chemistry, follow these steps carefully to complete the application process.

  1. Fill out the online application at ApplyTexas.
    • You will need to know the appropriate major code for your degree program. The major code for Chemistry is 620900.
    • Pay the application fee ($50 for US citizens and permanent residents; $75 for international students)
    • Personal Statement: Please specify in your Statement of Purpose which broad area of chemistry best describes your interests (analytical, inorganic, organic, or physical). Feel free to mention interdisciplinary interests and the names of any faculty members whose research particularly interests you. A list of our faculty and a synopsis of their research is listed on our faculty pages.
    • Letters of Recommendation: You will be asked to list the names and email addresses of the three people you wish to recommend you for admission. Once you submit your application, an email will be sent to each recommender instructing them to visit a website and complete a questionnaire. The letters will automatically be routed to the department.
  2. Send the following items directly to our graduate office:

    • Current CV or resume listing educational background, any related employment experience, and any relevant research experience.
    • Two official copies of your college transcripts. Photocopied transcripts will not be accepted.
  3. Submit the following items to:

    • Official GRE scores from The Educational Testing Service
      We require verbal and quantitative (math) scores . We do not require the chemistry subject test for admission. The ETS institution code for The University of Texas at Austin is 6882 . The departmental code at ETS for Chemistry is 0301. Photocopies of GRE scores will not be accepted.
    • Official TOEFL scores (International students only). Do not send photocopies of TOEFL scores with your printed materials. They must be reported through ETS.
    You may check on-line to see what materials have been received by our admissions office: https://utdirect.utexas.edu/admissions/status_check.WBX. Please allow at least two weeks after anticipated receipt by the Admissions Office at The University of Texas at Austin for your materials to appear as "received" at this site.
