International Applicants

Fall Admissions Deadline for International Applicants: January 1st

Thank you for your interest in our graduate studies program. In some cases, application requirements for international applicants are different than the requirements for U.S. applicants. This page is designed to assist international students through the application process for graduate school in Chemistry at The University of Texas at Austin.

Before you fill out the online application, please read How to Apply in addition to reading the information provided on this page.

The deadline for international applicants to apply for admission into the fall semester of each year is January 1st. Our program does not usually admit new graduate students in the spring or summer semesters.

The application fee for international students is $75. The application fee may be paid by credit card, bank draft or by money order payable to The University of Texas at Austin. Payment options are explained in more detail on the application.

International students who are already in the U.S. and pursuing a graduate degree at another university should provide at least two letters of recommendation from that institution. One of the two letters should be from their current research advisor. This indicates to The University of Texas that the other U.S. institution is aware of the student's intention to transfer to another university.

Your application is complete when the following items have been received:

  • On-line application
  • Application fee ($75 for international students)
  • Statement of purpose (Submit via online application)
  • Three letters of recommendation (Submit via online application). After you have submitted your online application, an email will be sent to each recommender asking them to visit a website and complete a questionnaire.
  • Official GRE score report from the Education Testing Service:
We require the verbal and quantitative (math) scores. (We do not require the chemistry subject test.) Please do not send photocopies of your test scores. They will not be reviewed by our admissions committee. Test scores should be reported by ETS to The Graduate & International Admissions Center (GIAC), The University of Texas at Austin, Austin, TX 78713-7608. The University’s ETS institution code is 6882. The departmental code for Chemistry is 0301.
  • Official TOEFL score report from ETS. (Minimum scores for U.T. admission: written test 550, computer-based 213, IBT 79). Test scores must be submitted to The Graduate & International Admissions Center (GIAC) through ETS. Please do not send photocopies of your test scores. They will not be reviewed by our admissions committee.
  • Two official copies of your original transcripts. For quicker review of your file, send your transcripts directly to our office instead of to GIAC:

Graduate Office / Attn: Graduate Coordinators
The University of Texas at Austin
    1 University Station, A5300
    Austin, TX 78712
  • Current CV or resume listing educational background, any related employment experience, and any relevant research experience (Send directly to the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Graduate Office. Do not send CVs or resumes to GIAC)

Please DO NOT INCLUDE any photographs, folders, or portfolios with your application materials. Please DO NOT include photocopies of test scores.

Our Admissions Committee cannot review your application until your file is complete. However, as long as you have completed your online application and paid your application fee, we can hold your file open past the January 1st deadline to await other supporting materials such as GRE scores, TOEFL scores, transcripts and recommendation letters. Final admission decisions are usually completed by April 15th.

You may check on-line to see what materials have been received by our Admissions office: https://utdirect.utexas.edu/admissions/status_check.WBX.
