Professor Jason Shear's chemistry laboratory has developed a technology that enables researchers to utilize microscopic three-dimensional protein structures. The potential applications of these "smart materials" are so significant that graduate student researchers from other disciplines have begun collaborating with the Shear lab in order to study antibiotic resistance, develop new medical devices and explore how 3-D hydrogels can help regrow nerve cells.
