Fall Admissions Deadline for International Applicants: January 1st
Thank you for your interest in our graduate studies program. In some cases, application requirements for international applicants are different than the requirements for U.S. applicants. This page is designed to assist international students through the application process for graduate school in Chemistry at The University of Texas at Austin.
Before you fill out the online application, please read How to Apply in addition to reading the information provided on this page.
The deadline for international applicants to apply for admission into the fall semester of each year is January 1st. Our program does not usually admit new graduate students in the spring or summer semesters.
The application fee for international students is $90. The application fee may be paid by credit card, bank draft or by money order payable to The University of Texas at Austin. Payment options are explained in more detail on the application.
International students who are already in the U.S. and pursuing a graduate degree at another university should provide at least two letters of recommendation from that institution. One of the two letters should be from their current research advisor. This indicates to The University of Texas that the other U.S. institution is aware of the student’s intention to transfer to another university.
IMPORTANT: All application materials may be submitted electronically to The Graduate and International Admissions Center (GIAC). DO NOT SEND PAPER MATERIALS OR DUPLICATE PAPER COPIES OF ANY ITEM; THIS WILL DELAY PROCESSING TIME. Your application is complete when all of the following items have been received.
1. Complete the on-line application at ApplyTexas beginning October 1st.
- The major code for Chemistry is 620900.
- Pay the application fee ($90 for international students).
- Personal Statement: Please specify in your Statement of Purpose which broad area of chemistry describes your interests (analytical, inorganic, organic, or physical). Feel free to mention interdisciplinary interests and the names of any faculty members whose research particularly interests you. A list of our faculty and a synopsis of their research is listed on our faculty pages.
- Letters of Recommendation: You will be asked to list the names and email addresses of the three people you have chosen to recommend you for admission. Once you submit your application, an email will be sent to each recommender instructing them to visit a website and complete a questionnaire. The letters will automatically be routed to the department.
2. After you have completed the application and paid your fee, upload the following items to your application. Detailed instructions are given on the GIAC website for uploading these materials to your My Status site.
- Current CV or resume listing educational background, any related employment experience, and any relevant research experience.
- Transcripts: a copy of an official transcript from every senior college you have attended.
3. Submit your score reports to GIAC at the address listed here. DO NOT SEND PAPER COPIES OR PHOTOCOPIES OF SCORES. These documents must be received directly from the Educational Testing Service (ETS) or they will not be accepted.
- Official GRE scores from The Educational Testing Service. We require verbal and quantitative (math) scores. We do not require the chemistry subject test for admission. The ETS institution code for The University of Texas at Austin is 6882. The ETS departmental code for Chemistry is 0301.
- Official TOEFL scores from ETS (Minimum scores for UT admission: written test 550, computer-based test 213, IBT 79).
Our Admissions Committee cannot review your application until your file is complete. However, as long as you have completed your online application and paid your application fee, we can hold your file open past the January 1st deadline to await other supporting materials such as GRE scores, TOEFL scores, and recommendation letters. Final admission decisions are usually completed by April 15th.
You may check the status of your application for receipt of materials at My Status website. Please allow at least two to four weeks after anticipated receipt by GIAC for your materials to appear as “received” at this site.
